Marwell Zoo!

Another commission saw me going down to Marwell Zoo for a day with LSC journalist JP. I was really hoping for a busy so I could get plenty of images of people enjoying the park, however it seemed that the cold weather and the fact it was Tuesday meant that it was a little deserted. I tried to concentrate my focus on the Animals themselves instead and try to capture them in ways that would make the feature different, after all wildlife photography isn't really my bag and I don't have many long fast lenses either! I spent most of the day plodding round, much like my subjects, and trying to find interesting angles and nice light. It did make me think of the book 'Zoo' by Anthony Browne that has some really lovely illustrations in it. I took the book with me for a source of inspiration. The images below are just a couple of out-takes but the real thing will appear in my tear sheet section of my website when its been published next month.

Working with my Brother as an Engineer today. Well, I say Engineer, I mean lackey to the real Engineers. Got a bit restless so I thought i'd get some practice in for an upcoming street portrait project with a twist I am planning for March. Testing different styles as and when I can. The project itself might take a while to do and I can envisage that I will be spending a few ice cold days on the streets of London and Sussex. All in the name of creativity hey.

I may have again neglected this blog but 2012 is going to be a new year and my resolution is to update this blog at least three times a month- as you can see 2012 is all about setting realistic targets. This also includes going to the gym at least twice this year- see realism, its the new optimism.

So, photography wise things seem to be building nicely. I have taken on a few new publications as well as keeping up with the old ones. I will post some new tear-sheets when all the stuff is published, it goes to print next week so not long to wait. In-between commissions I have been working on a mini collaboration with designer Hannah Rhodes who is also a great friend of mine. We have been taking road trips to Bird of Prey Sanctuaries across the South. Admittedly these trips haven't just been about making work, we would both be first to admit that we love to bore our friends with our obsession with Owls. So photographing birds of prey gave us the ideal opportunity to indulge in a little bird handling whilst also keeping us creative during our time off work work. I haven't even started editing this work but here are a few shots from the day.

In other unrelated news I moving to London in February so I hope that gives me the opportunity to break down some more doors and get myself out there.

Big day for me yesterday. After Months of what can only be described as bombardment, Guardian Picture Editor, Roger Tooth invited me to show him my portfolio. It was fascinating to have someone who really knows his stuff looking at my work. He gave me some great advice and said he would call if he had any work going! A-MAZING. I cheekily left with the visitors badge as a memento, hope this doesn't land me in trouble... just wanted it to show my kids when i'm 90 odd.

This is very old news but A while back I was editors pick for the Hungarian Eye witness photographic competition. BJP editor Diane Smyth chose me out as editors 'pick' in the portrait section. I went on to be shortlisted but didn't win the overall prize.

So...been a while.

My love hate relationship with my blog continues and this week I have promised myself to update at least once a week. So here goes, this is the first weekly update of many... I promise.

I spent last weekend in Norfolk photographing the final images for my project 'Time of the Tide'- I really think this could be a great project it just needs some tweaking. Some more images that show how people use these places around the coast would be great and really tie it all together.

Here's a couple of images that I made this weekend. I have another trip to Selsey on the South Coast at the end of the month, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates...

Haven't been out shooting for a while so I thought I would re-edit some old stuff. In particular my project 'In the Shadow of Giants' which I really had trouble editing down to fit my brief for my Uni hand-in. Now I really want to make it into a much larger project and even try and make a book from it... The project documents a tiny village that lays at the head of Loch Leven in Western Scotland. The village used to be at the centre of a thriving aluminium industry but, in 2004 the industry hit the fan and the village has since been left to the highland wilderness. Just to add insult to injury during the winter months the sun doesn't rise high enough to break over the Mamour mountain range so the village is cast into a deep shadow from October till March. Not a terribly cheery place but still very interesting. The images document the lives and surroundings of the people who still live in this lifeless place.

The introduction to my blog probably shouldn't be written at 2.29am on a Tuesday night. Nor should it be so unconsidered as this post will be. However, at least I am putting pen to paper, or fingers to keys to be precise. My blogaroo will be documenting my journey into the photographic industry, sharing new projects and commissions along the way. So to start as I mean to go on here are a few images from my latest commission for 'theWeather' Magazine. The editorial written by the talented Clare Finney is about the town of Eastbourne, in Sussex. The article discusses the changing face of this traditional seaside town...
